Me 2.0

Softbank Telecom Chooses Openwave Rich Mail

Lots of companies are jumping on the Web 2.0 bandwagon, but when one of Japan's largest telecommunications companies hops aboard, the industry takes notice.

SoftBank Telecom, the fixed-line telecommunications segment of SoftBank group selected Openwave® Rich Mail, an AJAX-based solution that provides a dynamic web interface across PCs and mobile devices. SoftBank Telecom will launch its Rich Mail services for its ODN and SpinNet internet services customers.

Openwave Rich Mail is a web-based e-mail service that gives operators the ability to incorporate voice calling, e-commerce and information services that drive value-added personalized services to compete with leading web mail providers like Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Windows Live Hotmail.

The value to users comes from Web 2.0 services such as search click-throughs, click-to-call and other services like location, traffic and news that are available through contextual hyperlinks within e-mail text. These additional services are bringing new monetizing opportunities for operators.

According to Kiyoshi Shinano, Softbank Telecom's Manager and Project Leader, "This Web Mail renewal is a pivotal service that demonstrates innovation being driven by our company. Openwave's Rich Mail solution allows us to provide our customers with an easy-to-use, unique messaging experience that gives us the competitive edge in the Web 2.0 content and communications market."

Openwave Rich Mail is part of Openwave's Converged Solutions and will serve as the web front-end for SoftBank Telecom's ODN Internet service, allowing the telco to combine content, communications and community into a seamless Web 2.0 internet experience.

"The Web 2.0 shift is changing the way we communicate," said Alon Schwartzman, Director of Product Marketing for Messaging Applications at Openwave. "Mobile and broadband operators alike are looking for ways to add value to their service offerings, and the next generation messaging for Web-based e-mail is a strategic direction that allows users to have access anytime, anyplace. Rich Mail is the mechanism many operators just like Softbank Telecom are turning to and providing Web 2.0 services just like Web mail leaders."

Just the Facts
Openwave Rich Mail is designed for carrier-scale deployment by broadband and mobile operators around the world. It offers operators the branding and personalization benefits of a web-based interface coupled with enhanced functionality of a PC-based email program. Enhanced features include the ability to preview email content, "drag and drop" files, and enable the usage of contextual right-click menus. The Rich Mail service is opt-in/opt-out, based on a user's preference and only offers links to pre-determined services that an operator has selected.
