NEC AMERICA LEVERAGES FULL POTENTIAL OF OPENWAVE PHONE SUITE VERSION 7

First Handset with V7 Suite to Roll out in United States

CTIA and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 27, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that its award winning Openwave Phone Suite Version 7 (V7) has been licensed to NEC America, Inc. (NEC), a leading provider of innovative communications products, solutions and services, for integration into its newest handsets, NEC's 232E High Definition Mobile* (HDM™) phones. As the first manufacturer to deploy the entire V7 framework in a mass-market phone, NEC is licensing Openwave Mobile Browser V7 and Openwave Mobile Messaging Client V7 software. The new phone is scheduled to be available in the United States in November 2004.

"We are extremely pleased with the result of our collaboration with NEC on this compelling handset," said Stephen Burke, vice president of the client software group at Openwave. "By taking advantage of all the functionality in the V7 Suite, such as the advanced framework elements that enable deep customization of the user interface as well as its graphics capabilities, NEC and Openwave are vividly demonstrating how client software can meet complex requirements to bring to market high performance, highly usable mass market phones."

Integration of V7 into the application layer of these handsets helps meet the demands of manufacturers like NEC to exercise more control over the look and feel of the phone.

"With Openwave Phone Suite Version 7, we not only achieve extensive customization of the user interface but we also are able to leverage our investment in V7 to easily scale with advanced functionality across multiple handsets," said Scott Spreen, assistant general manager, NEC's Wireless Division. "The flexibility and portability of Openwave's client software is important for the development of NEC's handsets so that we can respond to diverse operator requirements."

"NEC's new High Definition Mobile phone based on Broadcom's EDGE platform is a great example of how our leading EDGE silicon technology is enabling manufacturers to offer solutions that can take advantage of next-generation mobile applications," said Bob Rango, Vice President of Broadcom's Mobile & Wireless Group. "The significantly enhanced data throughput of our EDGE solution combined with the scalability and flexibility of Openwave Phone Suite Version 7 has enabled NEC to deliver a feature rich mobile phone with compelling multimedia applications."
