  NEC AMERICA LEVERAGES FULL POTENTIAL OF OPENWAVE PHONE SUITE VERSION 7
  

  First Handset with V7 Suite to Roll out in United States
 
CTIA and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 27, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that its award winning Openwave Phone Suite Version 7 (V7) has been licensed to NEC America, Inc. (NEC), a leading provider of innovative communications products, solutions and services, for integration into its newest handsets, NEC's 232E High Definition Mobile* (HDM™) phones. As the first manufacturer to deploy the entire V7 framework in a mass-market phone, NEC is licensing Openwave Mobile Browser V7 and Openwave Mobile Messaging Client V7 software. The new phone is scheduled to be available in the United States in November 2004.

Integration of V7 into the application layer of these handsets helps meet the demands of manufacturers like NEC to exercise more control over the look and feel of the phone.

Developers can download the Openwave Phone Simulator 6.2.2 and the MMS SDK to create and test their MMS content. The latest Phone Simulator contains the Mobile Messaging Client and can be downloaded from http://developer.openwave.com.
