  OPENWAVE BOLSTERS MOBILE MESSAGING POSITION

Openwave MMS Software Shipping on 60 devices; Openwave MMSC selected by 25 operator properties, representing subscriber base of 119 million

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - August 16, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced it has strengthened its mobile messaging position on both handsets and in operators' networks. With the recent closing of the acquisition of Magic4, Openwave's MMS software now ships on 60 different handsets representing over 20 manufacturers.

Mobile operators worldwide continue to deploy their MMS service with Openwave and worldwide operators such as Medi Telecom, a joint venture of Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom, and Triton PCS, and others in the Americas and Europe have recently selected Openwave's MMSC. The total addressable subscriber base Openwave's operator customers represent is 119 million.

Operators who deploy Openwave's client and MMSC software can enhance the user experience for mobile messaging services and applications. Operators can deliver these services across entire subscriber bases, from legacy handset users, to new handset users and to those who interact with multimedia messaging services by email, while also launching with customized clients to enhance services such as photo albums, printing, and blogging.

"Operators today face an eternal dilemma of which segment of the market do they optimize as they launch new services- the users on legacy handsets or on the newer advanced devices. Since messaging is about building communities, operators' newer services such as picture and video messaging must work on a range of multiple devices for all subscribers in order for operators to grow data usage and subscriber loyalty, " said Michael Doherty, vice president of Ovum's North America telecoms practice.

"This milestone underscores the importance of our client/server software and expertise, which enables operators to deliver an ever improving user experience, "said David Hose, senior vice president and chief development officer. "Since Openwave's software is designed to run on any handset and network and has advanced content adaptation capabilities, we help operators deliver and enhance their services across the widest range of handsets."
