ALCATEL PHONES SHIP WITH OPENWAVE WAP 2 MOBILE BROWSER

Upgrades for Latest Line of Color Handsets

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - September 30, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that Alcatel, a provider of end-to-end communications solutions around the world, has integrated and shipped Openwave Mobile Browser Version 6 in its latest MMS handsets. Currently, Openwave has licensed over 400 million units across all six versions of its client software to handset manufacturers around the world.

"Because of the usability and performance innovations in our WAP2 client software, we are seeing more and more customers like Alcatel come to us for upgrades," said Thomas Reardon, vice president and general manager, Openwave. "Best suited for today's multimedia mass market handsets, Version 6 can already be found in over 45 handset models from 19 manufacturers."

The two shipping phones from Alcatel have a color display, support 40 languages and are suitable for GPRS networks in the GSM market. One model, named the One Touch™ 535, is a multimedia mobile phone with a large color screen. Bringing users the latest in sound, image, message, internet and gaming technology, the One Touch™ 535 takes full advantage of the very latest useful multimedia technology available. The second model, named the One Touch 735 has the same features but also includes an embedded camera for photomessaging. In addition to the Openwave Mobile Browser Version 6, these terminals boast a number of innovative, fun features, with the spotlight on personalization.

"The WAP 2 version of Openwave Mobile Browser includes the strongest feature set for our latest mass market data phones," said Stéphane Klajzyngier, vice president of Operations, Alcatel. "Openwave's proven ability to port premium client software allows Alcatel to rollout handsets quickly in an increasingly competitive space."

This upgrade includes many new features to make browsing easier, including:
  • OMA DRM "forward lock"- Industry standard digital rights management implementation keeps licensed content secure.
  • URL Builder - Input table allows for easy entry of common URL elements such as "www." and ".com" saving users time and simplifying navigation
  • History & Forward Navigation - Recent browser history is stored for easy return to recently visited pages, both backward and forward.
For developers, this upgrade of Openwave Mobile Browser Version 6 offers more capabilities to customize and simplify the user experience, such as:
  • Programmable Softkeys - Markup language determines functions and wording so softkeys can be tailored for specific phones and services
  • WAP Pictograms - Industry standard icons such as smiley faces allow developers to know exactly which images will appear on the screen
  • Default entry mode property - Markup language can also determine the default setting for field input entry. For instance, if a field is intended for a phone number, a developer can set the default entry to "number" reducing the end user effort of choosing numbers over letters
