OPENWAVE'S THOMAS REARDON NAMED ONE OF THE WORLD'S TOP YOUNG INNOVATORS BY TECHNOLOGY REVIEW, MIT'S MAGAZINE OF INNOVATION

Reardon To Be Honored September 24 - 25 at The Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA - September 15, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that Thomas Reardon, vice president and general manager of the client product group, has been named to the 2003 list of the world's 100 Top Young Innovators by Technology Review, MIT's Magazine of Innovation. The TR100, chosen by the editors of Technology Review and an elite panel of judges, consists of 100 individuals under age 35 whose innovative work in technology has a profound impact on today's world. Nominees are recognized for their contributions in transforming the nature of technology in industries such as biotechnology, computing, energy, medicine, manufacturing, nanotechnology, telecommunications and transportation.

A key visionary, Reardon's contributions to Openwave System's strategic direction have helped make it a leader in mobile phone software and most recently helped grow the installed base of Openwave browsers on mobile phones to more than 400 million worldwide. He is central to the development of concepts that have greatly impacted new Web standards for mobile devices, and brought renewed industry focus to the power of mass-market, low-cost, feature-rich mobile phones. Mr. Reardon joined Openwave in 2001 through the acquisition of Avogadro, Inc. As co-founder and CEO of Avogadro, he spearheaded a messaging platform to connect the wired and wireless Internet to increase functionality for mobile data services. In 1994, he launched the Internet Explorer project at Microsoft Corporation, and went on to foster the emergence of XML and CSS, from standard's inception to broad adoption by Microsoft. His technical direction of the Microsoft Internet Explorer project earned him praise as a key architect of Microsoft's Internet turnaround. Previously, Mr. Reardon led the successful cloning and implementation of Novell's Netware protocols, and the subsequent victory by Microsoft in the LAN software market. He was a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) member from 1997-2000 and is a holder of six U.S. patents. He has been profiled in such books as "The Plot to Get Bill Gates", "Overdrive", and "How the Web Was Won." Thomas Reardon has also been invited to speak at the Emerging Technologies conference at MIT on Thursday, September 25, from 1:15 PM - 2:45 PM in an address titled, "The Future of E-Commerce."

TR100's unparalleled panel of judges includes:
  • Vinton Cerf, WorldCom Corporation
  • David Tennenhouse, Intel
  • Dr. Gordon Bell, Microsoft
  • Christina Lampe-Onnerud, TIAX
  • Stephen Quake, California Institute of Technology
  • Rodney Brooks, MIT CSAIL
  • George Whitesides, Harvard University
"Innovation and technological change are essential to worldwide economic growth. Now, more than ever, it's important to recognize that there is no one technology driving the next wave of success, but rather several that, when fused together, will create another era of significant change for our society. The members of this year's TR100 hail from fields such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, wireless, energy, computing and medicine. Each is actively developing the emerging technologies that we feel will profoundly impact our world in the century ahead," said Robert Buderi, editor-in-chief of Technology Review.

The Emerging Technologies conference features keynotes, panels and breakout discussions on the transformative technological innovations that have the potential to fuel new economic growth and dramatically change the future. Other speakers include Michael Dell, Founder and CEO of Dell Computer Corporation; Jeffrey R. Immelt, Chairman of the Board and CEO of General Electric; Bob Metcalfe, Founder of 3Com Corporation and General Partner at Polaris Venture Partners; and Nathan Myhrvold, Ph.D., Managing Director of Intellectual Ventures and former CTO of Microsoft Corporation.
