OPENWAVE UNVEILS MULTIMEDIA MESSAGING SERVICE CENTER VERSION 2

Multimedia Messaging Technology Addresses Key Industry Issues, Helps Operators Differentiate, Ignite Adoption, and Increase Usage

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - July 16, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OPWV), the leading independent provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced the release of Openwave® Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) Version 2. Designed to improve the multimedia messaging experience and increase MMS usage, Openwave MMSC Version 2 provides innovative and market-differentiating features such as superb email support, the widest range of MMS and legacy handset support, as well as a rich set of pre-built applications including a gallery of images and photo albums, which provide compelling content, a branding opportunity for operators and a chance for subscribers to further personalize their MMS experience.

Openwave, the only MMSC vendor with multimillion user deployments and over two years of production experience, has leveraged its expertise to build MMSC Version 2-MMS technology that addresses critical industry issues such as low penetration of MMS handsets and poor transcoding across an increasing range of handset models. As a result of Openwave's handset interoperability program, MMSC Version 2 includes an intelligent rules engine which enables MMSC to optimize the transcoding to offer a better multimedia experience on more clients. Openwave MMSC is fully interoperable with Openwave Mobile Messaging Client, one of the most widely available MMS clients in 2003 handsets worldwide. In addition, MMSC Version 2 has proven interoperability with the widest range of MMS clients including embedded software on handsets as well as clients based on Palm OS, Pocket PC and BREW.

Openwave MMSC Version 2 not only offers a superior experience across more handsets, but it also extends the MMS community to email users and legacy handset users to accelerate viral adoption of MMS. Openwave MMSC Version 2 email and legacy support provides an intuitive experience with the ability to view MMS messages from a PC or WAP browser as they were intended to be seen on an MMS capable handset. Openwave MMSC also includes comprehensive anti-spam capabilities and enables users to opt in to receive and pay for emails so operators are able to tap into a new revenue stream.

"Many major operators are now entering the second stage of MMS," says Mark Lowenstein, managing director of Mobile Ecosystem. "As more content and handsets become available, wireless operators are becoming focused on offering unique content and an improved user experience over a scalable, flexible, and robust platform."

"Many operators offer an MMS service, but they are unable to optimize or differentiate their service due to limited available content and handsets," said David Hose, vice president and general manager, infrastructure group for Openwave. "Openwave MMSC Version 2 helps operators solve this problem by providing a solution that offers a better end user experience across both MMS and legacy devices. In addition, MMSC Version 2 aims to stimulate and increase MMS usage by providing easy access to ready content as well as providing a simple way to save and send personal content."

Openwave MMSC Version 2 leverages the strengths of market-leading Openwave MAG and MX technology at the heart of 70 mobile operators and 22 broadband suppliers. Openwave technology has already been chosen to power multimedia messaging at over ten operators, including five CDMA operators, to enable delivery of differentiated services to subscribers worldwide.
