ESRI AWARDS OPENWAVE WITH SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN GIS AWARD

REDLANDS, Calif. - July 26 -- Openwave Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), chosen from more than 100,000 organizations, was honored on July 25 for its innovative use of geographic information system (GIS) technology. ESRI, the world leader in GIS software, recognizes organizations that provide substantial benefits to society through their use of GIS technology. The Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) award ceremony took place at the Twenty-second Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, California, among thousands of GIS professionals.

The SAG award symbolizes outstanding achievement in applying GIS in new and innovative ways. The award was presented to Openwave for Friend Finder, a cutting-edge location-based services application that allows mobile users to find friends and colleagues over the Web and WAP devices. Once found, users can communicate with each other over SMS. Openwave recently closed the acquisition of SignalSoft Corporation, the developer of the Wireless Location Services® software suite, which includes Friend Finder.

“I am thrilled to see our users apply GIS software to truly make a difference in our world. Each of the organizations being honored today has helped expand the use of GIS technology and improve our quality of life,” says Jack Dangermond, ESRI president.

ESRI is proud to honor the Special Achievement in GIS award winners and recognize their contributions to the world through GIS technology. Each of these distinguished organizations deserves recognition for the dedication and diligence required to have such a beneficial impact on society.

Other organizations honored at the 2002 User Conference include Verizon Wireless, the New York City Office of Emergency Management, the Lithuanian State Department of Tourism, Skyguide Swiss Air Navigation Services, City of Vienna, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources and Conservation Service, Jefferson County Public School District, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
