OPENWAVE WORLD CUP INTERACTIVE PUSH APPLICATION DRIVES 40% INCREASE IN WIRELESS DATA USAGE FOR TELESP CELULAR

Telesp Celular to Continue Deploying PUSH-Enabled Wireless Data Applications for Other Events to Drive Mobile Internet Adoption

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - June 25, 2002 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, and Telesp Celular, Brazil’s largest telecommunications company, today announced the outstanding results of the joint World Cup PUSH Campaign. In a collaborative venture between the two companies along with Folha Online, the key content provider, Telesp Celular has provided its wireless subscribers with World Cup game schedules, scores, event news and other information, delivered directly to their wireless phones with Openwave’s PUSH technology. Increasing the already high level of excitement surrounding the World Cup, Brazilians are able to follow the games by receiving updates, and with the one-click, immediately access detailed content and bring the subscriber to the World Cup experience.

The World Cup PUSH Campaign increased wireless data services usage through its Waaap portal by forty percent, with Openwave PUSH technologies playing a central role in this significant increase. Telesp Celular has recorded the average per day usage numbers as growing from 500,000 transactions per day at the beginning of the games to a sustained average of 700,000 transactions per day. The collaboration between Telesp Celular and Openwave ensured that regardless of the surge in traffic, the service was successful, and supported the additional hits.

“Openwave’s innovative PUSH capability combined with their determination and commitment to help us grow our business have driven a significant increase in the use of our wireless data services,” said Luis Avelar, vice president of Wireless Data at Telesp Celular. “We recognize that PUSH enabled wireless data applications are a critical element of the mobile experience that drives usage and adoption.”

Most popular were sites listing game scores, upcoming games and news surrounding the Cup, provided by Folha Online. The campaign highlighted PUSH as a critical functionality for developers, making content richer, more engaging and easier to receive for subscribers.

“PUSH has surpassed our expectations. Our traffic has skyrocketed by 134 percent once our COPA content was enabled by Openwave’s PUSH applications,” said Ana Busch, executive director at Folha Online.

Telesp Celular will continue to use Openwave’s PUSH capabilities by providing interactive and real-time updates for other events significant to Brazilians such as local soccer tournaments, reality-based TV shows, and tennis championships to name a few.

"Openwave develops mobile data marketing campaigns based on popular sports and entertainment content making the mobile phone a natural extension of a person's everyday experience,” said Rich Wong, senior vice president of marketing at Openwave. “The amazing results of this World Cup PUSH campaign with Telesp marks the evolution of the wireless industry as it moves beyond early adopters and begins to appeal to mainstream subscribers of wireless data services.”

Telesp Celular, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, originally licensed the Openwave Mobile Access Gateway in May 2000 to launch their first mobile data services, and continues to power their wireless networks with the latest version of the Mobile Access Gateway, bringing inherent enhancements such as increased data transmission speeds.
