Openwave Extends Regional Footprint with Mobile Access Gateway 5.0, Email Mx and Mobile Email

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - September 24, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that the international mobile Internet portal timnet.com, the wireless services company of Telecom Italia Mobile (Telecom Italia Group - NYSE: TI), has licensed the Openwave™ Mobile Access Gateway, Openwave™ Email Mx and Openwave™ Mobile Email communication products to provide value-added messaging and mobile Internet services to Telecom Italia and Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) wireless network operators spanning several countries in Latin America. By hosting the Openwave solution through an application service provider (ASP) model, timnet.com can offer speed-to-market to the TIM operators in Latin American that intend to bring mobile Internet and messaging services to their collective more than 8 million subscribers.

"The international mobile Internet and messaging market is booming as we've seen already in Europe and Japan, and Latin America is the next hot sector," said Mike Mulica, senior vice president, Office of Customer Operations at Openwave. "We look forward to working with timnet.com to emulate the success we've experienced with our customers worldwide. timnet.com can help local TIM carriers quickly bring to market unique and useful mobile Internet services while creating immediate, lucrative revenue opportunities."

timnet.com will begin initial rollouts of Openwave-enabled mobile Internet services in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela, followed by a second phase rollout in Argentina and Chile. Demonstrating impressive expansion in Latin America, timnet.com is the only interconnected mobile internet portal of the region.

"timnet.com's goal is to become the leading provider of advanced mobile services within the Latin American territory," said Federico Pisani Massamormile CEO of timnet.com. "To drive the market forward, we have to be able to rely on proven technology. Providing carrier-grade messaging platforms with over 180 million licensed mailbox seats around the world, Openwave has the expertise we need to be able to realize the potential for mobile messaging in Latin America."

Openwave Mobile Access Gateway supports enhanced mobile applications on mobile devices and provides carriers with an unparalleled level of control, functionality, security and flexibility when offering wireless Internet solutions. The gateway is WAP 1.2 and WAP 1.2 Push compliant and supports the highly anticipated WAP 2.0 standard, which will enable timnet.com to scale with any TIM carrier to deliver Next Generation services. The Mobile Access Gateway supports TDMA and GSM/GPRS networks, and also adheres to leading industry standards and initiatives, including the GSM Association's recently announced M-Services Guidelines.

Openwave Email Mx messaging platform creates new revenue opportunities for carriers with a full complement of Next Generation messaging services, including managed outsourcing with delegated administration, as well as mobile Internet access. The platform is highly scalable and reliable, with standards-based architecture to allow future upgrades and integration with advanced applications, such as unified messaging.

Openwave Mobile Email extends the Email Mx platform to provide customers with a completely integrated wireless and PC-based messaging solution. With Mobile Email, timnet.com is able to deliver messaging services to any browser-enabled device and allow subscribers to access email with minimal keystrokes in an intuitive manner for a superior mobile Internet experience. In addition, users have the ability to set personal alerts for notification through the self-care application with Email Mx and Mobile Email. All browser-equipped mobile devices are supported via any wireless application protocol over any cellular network. Openwave Mobile Email benefits both carriers and subscribers, with carriers able to increase airtime usage by enabling subscribers to conveniently access personal email and easily respond to notification alerts triggered by incoming messages.
