OPENWAVE AND ZOOMTOWN JOIN FORCES TO BRING VOICEXML-BASED UNIFIED MESSAGING TO MARKET

Leading Broadband Provider to Deploy Platform from Openwave and Cisco

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and CINCINNATI, Ohio - September 5, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open Internet-based communication infrastructure software and applications, and ZoomTown, the wholly-owned Internet broadband subsidiary of next-generation communications provider Broadwing Inc. (NYSE: BRW), today announced they are working together to bring a VoiceXML™-enabled unified messaging solution to market.

ZoomTown is working to deploy the Unified Messaging solution to its Cincinnati customers, enabling subscribers to access voicemail, email, and faxes from a single inbox. The Openwave™ Unified Messaging solution is designed to work with Cisco’s award-winning AS5300 universal gateway, used by ZoomTown to provide consistent broadband connectivity for subscribers. Using VoiceXML, an industry standard scripting language, enables ZoomTown to offer a simple and flexible unified messaging solution for its customers.

Each company will be contributing to the rollout of the new unified messaging service. Cisco’s sophisticated networking equipment combined with Openwave’s carrier-class VoiceXML-based platform and communications software creates a high-performance architecture with proven scalability, flexibility and reliability. ZoomTown, with one of the highest penetrations of broadband users in the country, adds a deep understanding of the consumer and business-user experience, which will help move the solution toward market deployment as a valuable communication tool for subscribers.

“ZoomTown, Cisco Systems, and Openwave all recognize the value of VoiceXML and the benefits that the Openwave Unified Messaging solution will deliver to end users,” said Marc Linden, group vice president and general manager at Openwave. “Openwave Unified Messaging is built to migrate easily from today’s networks to next-generation networks and further demonstrates Openwave’s commitment to continued leadership and innovation through an open, standards-based approach leveraging the strength of partners like Cisco and ZoomTown.”

As a key component of Openwave™ Messaging Services, Unified Messaging will provide a single inbox for access to voicemail, email messages, faxes, contact information, calendar, and task information. Users will be able to access and manage multiple messages easily, regardless of the message type or the device they choose to use—whether by computer, standard telephone or mobile phone. Openwave Unified Messaging enables “Voicemail Anywhere” by allowing users to forward voice messages to anyone with an Internet address. In addition, subscribers can use Reply-By-Voice to any type of message, and can personalize the service so that they will be notified of urgent emails or voice messages via the computer, telephone, or pager.

Subscribers also receive an integrated Personal Information Manager (PIM) for their address book and calendar and the ability to have their email messages audibly read to them via Text-To-Speech technology.

“Now, more than ever, people want to simplify their busy lives. A service that lets people send, receive, store, and retrieve any type of message from a single location is going to considerably simplify the way they communicate,” said Kurt Frehner, Director of Sales, Marketing and Product Definition for ZoomTown. “To help us deliver the VoiceXML service we wanted, we chose to work with industry leaders Cisco and Openwave because their combined solution is a scalable platform built on a reliable infrastructure that already serves over 180 million subscribers.”
