OPENWAVE NAMES HONG KONG AS ITS ASIA PACIFIC HEADQUARTERS

Local Debut of M-Services in Anticipation of Surging Mobile Internet Software Demand in Greater China

Hong Kong - August 22, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader in open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, has named Hong Kong as its Asia Pacific headquarters. Openwave’s selection of Hong Kong as a key regional headquarters -- one of four globally -- marks the company’s increased focus on Asia, in particular on Greater China.

With mobile phone penetration rates in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea ranking among the highest in the world, the company believes that these markets show a strong propensity for adopting new innovations. China’s Ministry of Information Industry reported at the end of July that there were 120.6 million mobile phone subscribers in China, thereby surpassing the US as the world largest cellular market.

“Openwave’s market-leading products, global experience and local presence are key elements of our strategy in the Asia Pacific Region,” said Brian Plackis, General Manager, Openwave Asia Pacific. “Carriers and communication service providers require immediate revenue-generating mobile Internet services for their subscribers, and working from our office in Hong Kong, we aim to provide them with the latest cutting-edge technologies to make the mobile Internet happen.” The Hong Kong facility has both sales and technical personnel to provide excellent customer service to customers in the region.

According to Plackis, a cornerstone to Openwave’s growth plans in the region is to market the Openwave(TM) Services OS(TM) suite of open, IP-based mobile Internet software. The Services OS suite is designed to enable mobile operators to rapidly create and deploy new revenue-generating services while providing mobile subscribers with a more compelling, easy-to-use, and personalized mobile Internet experience. The modular software suite is comprised of three interoperable product categories that are designed to enable operators to easily customize their mobile Internet solutions to meet the needs of their subscribers -- from content download to unified messaging to synchronization offerings.

As a supporter of the recently announced GSM Association’s M-Services Initiative (please see separate release dated June 13th, 2001), Openwave intends to help drive adoption of the mobile Internet by delivering a dramatically improved user experience, promoting the use of the highly intuitive graphic user interface browser and providing operators with the software to quickly deploy compelling consumer services such as ring tones images and wallpapers.

To date, Openwave customers in Asia Pacific include some best-of-breed carriers -- China Mobile, Shanghai Telecom, Hutchison Telecom, Sunday, Taiwan Cellular, KG Telecom, LG Telecom, StarHub, Telecom New Zealand and Telstra Australia, among others.
