  JITONG SELECTS OPENWAVE MESSAGING PLATFORM

Jitong to Base its Next-Generation Internet Services on the Openwave™ Email Mx Platform

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and BEIJING, China - 25 July, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that Jitong Network Communications Company Limited, one of the first alternative carriers in China, has selected the Openwave™ Email Mx solution to provide value-added data services to Jitong’s customer base. Email Mx, a core component of the Openwave™ Services OS™ suite of mobile Internet software would allow Jitong to offer messaging services that would accelerate its customer acquisition and enhance customer loyalty. The messaging platform was chosen over other international and domestic messaging solutions providers.

“The Openwave Email Mx platform is designed to open up new revenue opportunities for Jitong with a suit of premium next-generation messaging services,” said ZQ Shr, general manager of Openwave Systems, China. “We strive to help our customers achieve a positive return on their investment by delivering innovative, valuable applications to improve the way people communicate. Our partnership with Jitong is an important step in this direction by enabling them to deliver more value-added services.”

The alignment with Jitong further reinforces Openwave’s footing in China. Jitong is the third telecom carrier in China that is working with Openwave following its cooperation with China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) and Shanghai Telecom Corporation since the Company’s entry into China.

“Data services are the cornerstone of Jitong’s business,” said Yu Weixing, vice president of Jitong Network Communications. “We selected Openwave’s Email Mx because of its high scalability to meet the demands of China’s booming messaging market. The solution also lays the foundation to further develop our value-added data services and allows us to bring flexible, reliable and secure messaging services to our consumers nationwide which includes enterprise users. We believe the Openwave Email Mx platform enables us to build seamless migration paths from our current network configurations to next generation networks.”

With a suite of premium next-generation messaging services, including managed outsourcing with delegated administration, IP voicemail and fax, and web access, the Openwave Email Mx platform is designed to unite converging data and wireless networks on a single, scalable, IP-based infrastructure that can accommodate the addition of millions of users. The Email Mx deployment at Jitong will be completed this summer.
