  OPENWAVE ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR SYNCML

Openwave to Leverage SyncML to Deliver Revolutionary Platform for Universal Synchronization

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - July 18, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced it has joined SyncML as a sponsoring member. As a leader in the mobile Internet industry and a proponent of open standards, Openwave supports SyncML as an important step to create robust and compelling synchronization solutions that will ultimately provide new convenience to users of mobile devices. Openwave plans to utilize SyncML open standards to expand the synchronization capabilities of its Services OS—an integrated suite of infrastructure platform and application services software for mobile operators.

The SyncML-compliant synchronization solutions that Openwave plans to introduce will enable operators to rapidly create and deploy new revenue-generating services. Giving subscribers the ability to have greater access to their personal contact information from their cell phones will result in increased air-time minutes, giving operators the opportunity to raise average revenue per user. These solutions will also create new opportunities for other address book-related data services and applications that include wireless email, unified messaging and SMS.

“Today’s mobile devices continue to bring great convenience to people’s lives, providing valuable services other than voice,” said Andrew Wyatt, vice president, Synchronization Products Group at Openwave. ”Openwave is committed to adding to that convenience by making data services universal, personal, and easy to use. Openwave will allow busy people to access and update personal information stored on multiple devices, anytime, anywhere, making the mobile phone an increasingly practical and indispensable communications tool.”

Openwave’s carrier-class SyncML-based solutions will enable subscribers to use a wireless connection to match their cell phone or (wireless) PDA address book with their internet address book on their carrier's portal. This technology can also be used to match the same data with popular Personal Information Management (PIM) products, such as Microsoft Outlook. This will help consumers update their personal address book from any location, while maintaining a back-up copy of their information when they upgrade or lose their mobile phone.

SyncML is an open industry specification for universal data synchronization of remote data and personal information across multiple networks, platforms and devices. SyncML is currently supported by more than 600 key wireless companies and has been adopted by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as the protocol for future data synchronization services.
