NEW ZEALAND'S LEADING WIRELESS NETWORK OPERATOR, TELECOM NEW ZEALAND, SELECTS LUCENT AND OPENWAVE TO LAUNCH COMMERCIAL WAP SERVICES

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - May 16, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that Telecom Mobile Limited (Telecom New Zealand), the leading mobile network operator in New Zealand, has chosen Lucent Technologies and Openwave to provide a complete, Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-based mobile Internet solution. Telecom New Zealand is the first network operator in New Zealand to deploy the Openwave™ Mobile Access Gateway.

As the foundation of the Openwave™ Services OS™, the Mobile Access Gateway enables Telecom New Zealand to increase revenue opportunities by offering highly compelling wireless services to its customers while its scalable architecture provides a solid foundation for next generation, innovative services.

The Mobile Access Gateway will run on Telecom New Zealand’s new CDMA network beginning mid-year 2001. The CDMA network will provide customers with access to the Internet and highly individualized services. Using Openwave’s Mobile Access Gateway, Telecom New Zealand can offer its subscribers a broad range of Internet-based wireless services, including info-on-demand services such as financial news, weather and stock quotes.

Lucent will work closely with Telecom New Zealand to facilitate a quick time-to-market. In addition, Lucent will work with Openwave and Telecom New Zealand to continuously innovate on new value added service offerings to end consumers.

“This relationship with Telecom New Zealand allows Openwave to ignite a new region,” said Paul Adkins, General Manager for Openwave Systems in Asia Pacific. “We're proud to work with Lucent to expedite Telecom New Zealand’s time-to-market in delivering leading-edge, value-added wireless technology to attract, retain and grow their subscribers base.”

As the market leader for the mobile Internet, Openwave software has already been deployed in more than 70 percent of the world’s Internet-enabled phones. Additionally, components of the Services OS have been deployed by mobile operators who service more than 50 percent of the world’s mobile subscribers.
