CERTICOM AND OPENWAVE TEAM TO ENABLE DIGITAL CERTIFICATES FOR WIRELESS TRANSACTIONS

Companies Announce Plan for Openwave to Embed MobileTrust™ Root Certificate

HAYWARD and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - December 11, 2000 -- Certicom (Nasdaq: CERT; TSE: CIC), a leading provider of mobile e-business security, and Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the combination of Phone.com and Software.com, today announced that Openwave will embed the Certicom MobileTrust root certificate in the Openwave™ UP.Browser® microbrowser. The UP.Browser is the market-leading WAP microbrowser, currently licensed to over 40 mobile device manufacturers. Inclusion of Certicom's trusted root in the UP.Browser provides enhanced security through the use of server authentication for consumers who engage in wireless transactions such as stock trading, wagering, and banking. As part of the agreement, Certicom becomes Premier root key provider, allowing both companies to jointly promote the use of digital certificates for the Openwave UP.Link™ server and the recently announced Openwave Secure Enterprise Proxy.

Certicom's MobileTrust Certificate Authority Service provides the market with a trusted end-to-end security solution for digitally signed transactions, a crucial component in securing sensitive, private transactions on today's wireless Internet. MobileTrust's certificates are based on the WAP standard for Wireless Transaction Layer Security (WTLS Class II) and offer users additional security to leverage the Internet for confidential communications and extends their reach to do business on the wireless Internet.

"Certicom is well respected for its leadership in secure wireless communications," said Jeff Damir, group vice president of the Device Product Group for Openwave. "Including Certicom's MobileTrust root certificates in our WAP browser products will allow our UP.Link gateway customers to leverage Certicom's digital certificates for increased trust and security."

Openwave's UP.Browser microbrowser is WAP-compliant and optimized for mass-market mobile phones and other wireless devices. Using UP.Browser, wireless subscribers can access Internet-based information and services that are hosted on network operators' or third-party Web servers. UP.Browser has been licensed to over 40 vendors and released in over 80 distinct phone models for all currently available major digital standards, including CDMA, GSM, PDC, PHS, and TDMA.

By supporting Certicom's MobileTrust root certificate, the Openwave UP.Browser will provide an additional layer of security for protecting valuable electronic content. Certicom's MobileTrust certificates are fully compliant with the standards for certificates as defined by the WAP Forum.

"It is very key for Certicom to have Openwave as part of the trust network of Certicom's public Certificate Authority, MobileTrust," said Richard Depew, Certicom Executive Vice President. "Openwave is a leading provider of software that enables the delivery of commerce and Internet-based services to mass-market wireless devices. The partnership provides an advantage to Openwave customers seeking additional security for efficient wireless high value transactions."
