Openwave® Passport
Faster networks, adaptive content solutions, affordable monthly data plans and the introduction of high-end, touch-sensitive devices have increased mobile data usage - specifically mobile internet traffic. Openwave Passport enables the mobile operator to capitalize on this consumer behavior by offering a range of personalized access and service options.
New revenue streams come from well-timed, relevant offers based on a personal profile or the type of content being accessed at the time. The operator might, for example, offer a trial period of free data access or discounted service if the subscriber opts to receive advertisements.
Operator Benefits
- Attract New Data Users: Personalized, time-based access options (e.g. day, hour and week passes) attract new data users who might be averse to contract-based data access plans or roaming users not wanting to incur expensive data charges.
- Up-Sell Relevant Services: By eliminating the fear of unwanted expenditures on download bandwidth (e.g. $2 for a song and $10 for the download), users are likely to spend more money on operator-owned content during a browsing session.
- Ensure a fair usage policy: Implement data volume limits associated with time-based or volume-based access. For example, the operator offers a time-based pass with a one-day cap of 100Mb of data for $1.99, or offers volume-based access of 100Mb of data for $1.99.
- Encourage the Discovery of New Services: Passport is a low-cost way of marketing and trialing new service offerings to subscribers. Operators can target content or services based on personal profile and online behavior.
- Prevent "Bill Shock": Passport can be used to apply time- and/or volume-based thresholds for roaming users keeping the user informed of access options and associated costs thus avoiding the shock of seeing unanticipated data roaming charges on their monthly bill. Passport Self Care lets roaming users monitor their data consumption and optionally extend their service on demand.
Subscriber Benefits
- A Personalized User Experience: Subscribers enjoy the flexibility of pay-as-you-go access to the mobile internet and a range of data services. Subscribers choose their method of access and payment is simple. A single click debits a subscriber's account or deducts from outstanding credit.
- Targeted Services: Passport allows subscribers to freely discover and sample new services without being forced into mobile data contracts that are not aligned with their online behavior.
